The new Sure Start initiative space was created in two phases. The project entailed the initial refurbishment of some existing low-rise 1960s buildings, followed by the construction of new link buildings.
The careful design of the new elements served to unify the existing buildings and to negotiate the level change between them, as well as accommodate the extended brief.
A cantilevered canopy of steel with Douglas Fir infill wraps around the perimeter of the new classrooms, keeping the edge of the building column free. Daylight was maximized with the use of fully glazed external screens and the incorporation of new clerestory and roof-lit glazing into the buildings.
